6 High paying jobs and careers UK + how to start them and reach the top - Earn £92K +
in this video i'm going to show you six
of the highest paying career paths in
the uk right now
and i'm also going to show you how you
can get started in each one and work
your way to the top
if you're just entering the world of
work or perhaps you're looking to start
a new career
then it pays to know which career paths
are the most lucrative
and it also helps to know how you can
get started in them and how you can
progress your way to the top and reach
the top pay levels
we recently did a study over at standout
cv where we used data from the office of
national statistics
to find out what the highest paying
careers in the uk are right now
and then we did some further research to
find out what the most common routes
were for people to enter those careers
and work their way to the top end of the
00:44
pay scales so in this video i'm going to
00:45
look at six of these high paying careers
00:47
and tell you the following things what
00:49
the career is
00:50
so what the job involves what you'll be
00:52
doing and what kind of skills are needed
00:53
how much money you can earn so what are
00:55
the highest average pays
00:57
for the top-end jobs within these
00:59
careers the typical career path for each
01:01
job
01:01
so how do people get started in the job
01:03
what kind of progression and promotions
01:05
do they take to work their way up to the
01:06
top
01:07
and most importantly how to get started
01:08
in these careers so what sort of
01:10
entry-level jobs do you need to look at
01:12
applying for to get started
01:13
what kind of qualifications do you need
01:15
and i'm going to try
01:16
where possible to look at the most
01:19
easiest ways to get into these careers
01:21
and also as you go through the video if
01:23
you want to check out any of the
01:24
resources i mentioned so some of the job
01:26
sites or training providers
01:27
they're all in the description below
01:29
first career on this list is financial
01:31
manager
01:32
so financial managers are broadly
01:34
speaking in charge of looking after a
01:36
business money
01:37
so they will be doing things like
01:38
reporting on financial health
01:40
ensuring the company stayed profitable
01:42
and looking after all of their tax and
01:44
accounting requirements
01:45
finance jobs are generally speaking well
01:47
suited to people with a good head for
01:49
figures
01:50
and people with an organized and
01:51
methodical approach to work the average
01:53
financial manager
01:54
in the uk earns around 67 000 pounds a
01:56
year but it's not uncommon to see
01:58
finance managers earn well in excess of
01:59
a hundred thousand pounds a year there
02:01
are lots of different roles within
02:02
finance so there are lots of different
02:03
approaches you can take to get started
02:05
but we found most commonly that people
02:07
would start in some kind of entry-level
02:08
finance role
02:10
like a finance assistant or an accounts
02:12
assistant and
02:13
they would start on around about 19 000
02:15
pounds a year and these roles would
02:17
involve
02:17
supporting more senior finance staff
02:19
with things like administration and
02:21
general office work then within around
02:23
five years you would generally move into
02:25
a mid-level finance role like an
02:26
accountant
02:27
where you'd be on around 30 to 35 000
02:29
pounds a year and you would be
02:30
responsible for things like producing
02:32
financial reports and advising
02:33
businesses on tax issues and then around
02:35
13 years in the industry you could
02:37
expect to hit a management position
02:39
like financial controller and that's
02:42
salaries of around 67 000 pounds a year
02:44
but then you could progress further into
02:46
a role like a finance director where
02:48
you'd be looking after a large
02:49
businesses finances
02:50
where the salaries can be even higher
02:52
one of the good things about choosing
02:53
finance as a career is that you don't
02:55
necessarily need a lot of qualifications
02:56
to get started
02:58
because every company takes a different
02:59
approach to recruitment obviously
03:01
finance qualifications will help you to
03:02
get foot in the door in some places
03:04
but a lot of companies will take you on
03:06
with no experience and only basic
03:08
qualifications such as gcses
03:10
good grades in maths are favored by
03:12
employers of course because you will be
03:13
working with numbers a lot there are
03:14
also lots of apprenticeships available
03:16
within the finance sector and these are
03:18
schemes where employers take you on with
03:19
no experience
03:20
train you on the job and get you
03:22
qualified that's a really good way to
03:24
learn the industry and get paid at the
03:25
same time i'll actually put a link to
03:27
the association of accounting
03:29
technicians below in the description
03:31
they are a training provider and on
03:34
their website they have a big list of
03:35
apprenticeships are available right now
03:37
that you can apply to directly
03:39
where you can start working start
03:41
earning and start working towards
03:42
recognized qualifications if you have a
03:44
degree then you'll find that a lot of
03:45
the big accountancy firms like kpmg and
03:48
deloitte actually offer really good
03:49
graduate programs
03:50
or they'll take you on with no
03:51
experience and train you to become an
03:53
accountant over the course of two or
03:55
three years or so
03:56
i will of course put some links to some
03:57
of those in the description as well if
03:59
you're somebody who would prefer to
04:01
study first and gain some industry
04:02
qualifications before getting your first
04:04
job
04:04
then you can check out some of the big
04:06
accountancy qualification providers like
04:08
sema or acca i'll put links to those two
04:11
in the description
04:12
but personally i would always recommend
04:13
going down the apprentice route because
04:15
that way
04:15
the employer will pay for your
04:16
qualifications and you don't have to pay
04:18
for them out of your own pocket now
04:19
before i move on to career number two in
04:21
this list if you are finding this video
04:23
helpful don't forget to hit the like
04:24
button to save it in your like video so
04:26
you can come back
04:27
and watch it later if you need to and of
04:29
course if you do find this kind of
04:30
content helpful
04:31
then don't forget to subscribe to the
04:32
channel for more job search advice and
04:34
careers advice content create number two
04:36
on this list is it director i t
04:39
directors are essentially people who
04:41
manage
04:41
all of the company's technology so
04:43
nowadays that's really important because
04:44
most companies have
04:46
computers websites telephones
04:48
applications and more
04:50
so an it director's role is to make sure
04:52
all of that stuff is working efficiently
04:54
for the business
04:54
so of course this is a great career path
04:56
for anybody who is interested in
04:58
technology
04:58
and people who love solving complex
05:00
problems on average an it director in
05:03
the uk earns around 73
05:04
000 pounds a year but there is potential
05:06
to progress even further than that
05:08
technology is of course a huge field
05:10
and there are many different ways to
05:11
become an i.t director but we found the
05:13
most
05:13
common way that people were doing it was
05:15
by starting off as an entry level iit
05:17
support engineer
05:18
so as an i.t sport engineer you would be
05:20
working on the front line of the
05:21
technology in the business
05:23
so you might be dealing with calls from
05:25
the staff in the business saying that
05:26
their internet's dropped out or the
05:28
computer's not working
05:29
and you'd be working directly with them
05:31
to find out what's wrong with the
05:32
technology and to fix those problems
05:34
you'd also be involved with things like
05:36
setting up the physical network setting
05:38
the computers up
05:39
and setting new staff up with their user
05:42
accounts and passwords and emails and
05:43
things like that
05:44
generally speaking these roles start on
05:46
around about twenty thousand pounds a
05:47
year and from there you can work your
05:49
way up the ranks
05:50
to an it team leader and eventually an
05:52
it manager
05:53
where you'd be looking after a whole
05:54
department and managing a number of iot
05:57
support engineers or id support analysts
05:59
and there you'd be earning around about
06:01
the 40 000 pounds a year mark then at
06:02
around 12 to 15 years of experience you
06:04
could potentially move into
06:06
an i.t director role where you would be
06:08
responsible for overseeing all of the it
06:10
operations for a large business
06:11
on an average of around 70 000 pounds a
06:13
year it is another sector where you
06:15
don't necessarily need lots of
06:17
qualifications to get started
06:19
of course having an i.t related gcse or
06:21
a level will be really helpful but there
06:23
are lots of employers who provide ite
06:25
support apprenticeships where again you
06:27
can start with no experience
06:29
they will train you they'll provide the
06:30
training you need to get the right
06:31
qualifications to do the job efficiently
06:33
and you can actually earn money while
06:35
you train whilst doing the research for
06:36
this study we actually found a website
06:38
called
06:38
not going to uni who have a big list of
06:40
it apprenticeships
06:42
with companies who are looking to take
06:43
on iit support engineers and other
06:45
junior rt roles that require no
06:47
experience and you can apply for them
06:48
directly there
06:49
so i'll put a link for that in the
06:50
description below and generally speaking
06:52
when you're applying to it jobs
06:54
the employers will like to see that you
06:56
have some interest in it so if you have
06:58
no experience or no qualifications then
07:01
it will really help if you can put
07:03
something around your it-related
07:04
interests into the cv
07:06
so maybe you like to fix your friends
07:08
computers or maybe you've created a
07:10
website and an app in the past
07:12
if you can write about that kind of
07:13
stuff in your cv then obviously you're
07:15
going to become much more attractive for
07:16
iot roles
07:18
in the eyes of employers when you're
07:19
sending your cv out career number three
07:20
on this list is marketing director
07:22
marketing directors are essentially the
07:24
most senior person within a
07:26
marketing department of a business and
07:27
they're responsible for delivering all
07:29
of the marketing that goes on within
07:31
that business
07:32
so marketing is essentially anything to
07:34
do with making
07:35
the company's customers aware of their
07:37
products and services
07:39
so it could be anything from television
07:41
advertising to
07:42
social media marketing email marketing
07:44
campaigns
07:45
radio and everything in between so it
07:47
involves coming up with creative
07:48
campaigns advertising campaigns
07:50
marketing campaigns to
07:51
reach potential customers and actually
07:53
executing all of the work to get those
07:55
campaigns out there
07:56
and bring in as many potential customers
07:58
to the business as possible so marketing
08:00
generally tends to appeal to quite
08:01
creative people because you need to be
08:03
quite creative to come up with these
08:04
campaigns and these ideas
08:06
but you also have to be very organized
08:07
and good with people to manage their
08:09
campaigns manage the teams manage
08:11
budgets and also quite analytical
08:13
to report the figures back to management
08:15
the average marketing director in the uk
08:16
earns around 81 000 pounds a year
08:18
typically a marketing career will start
08:21
with a
08:21
junior entry-level marketing role such
08:23
as a marketing assistant
08:25
where you'd be helping out a marketing
08:26
team with some basic marketing work so
08:29
you might be helping to research things
08:31
for campaigns do some basic copywriting
08:33
or creating some content for social
08:35
media
08:35
and these jobs will generally pay around
08:37
19 to 22 000 pounds a year you normally
08:40
work in an assistant role for about one
08:41
or two years before becoming a marketing
08:43
executive
08:44
where you'd start to take more personal
08:45
responsibility over campaigns
08:47
and you might also start to specialize
08:49
in a particular area so you might start
08:51
to specialize in social media marketing
08:53
or email marketing or television
08:55
advertising and then around the 10-year
08:57
mark in the career you could expect to
08:58
move into a marketing manager role
09:00
and here you'd be managing a team of
09:02
marketing executives
09:03
and you might be responsible for a
09:05
particular service or product within a
09:07
business
09:08
a marketing manager roles tend to pay an
09:09
average of around 40 to 50 000 pounds a
09:11
year and then in another five years
09:13
you'd usually expect to move into a
09:15
marketing director role
09:16
and that's where you'd be looking after
09:18
the marketing efforts for a whole
09:19
business who'd be managing very large
09:21
teams very large budgets
09:23
and those roles pay an average of around
09:25
80 000 pounds a year marketing is yet
09:27
another profession where there
09:28
isn't one particular strict career path
09:30
there are lots of different ways that
09:31
you can get started and work your way
09:33
through
09:33
the top you don't necessarily need
09:35
qualifications to get an entry-level job
09:36
in marketing but of course it does help
09:38
a degree in marketing be very beneficial
09:40
but it's not 100 essential if you don't
09:42
want to commit to university in fact if
09:44
you want to get some
09:45
free marketing qualifications that are
09:46
recognized in the industry and will help
09:48
you to learn the fundamentals of
09:50
marketing then there's a couple of
09:51
places i would recommend checking out
09:52
google actually have their own training
09:54
resources they call google's digital
09:56
garage
09:56
and they've got lots and lots of digital
09:58
marketing courses on there which you can
09:59
take in a few hours
10:00
hubspot are also a big well-known
10:02
marketing company and they also have
10:04
lots of free online courses you can take
10:05
on content marketing
10:07
social media marketing web development
10:08
and more i will of course put links to
10:10
both of those in the description so if
10:12
you're looking to get into marketing but
10:13
you don't have a marketing degree or any
10:15
other kind of marketing qualifications
10:16
or experience
10:17
and i'd recommend taking some of these
10:19
courses or any other recognized
10:21
qualifications you can find
10:23
doing them getting trained up getting
10:24
some of those qualifications onto the cv
10:27
and then just get on to read or cv
10:28
library or somewhere start searching for
10:30
junior marketing jobs or assistant
10:32
marketing jobs see what you can find
10:34
start applying
10:35
and just look to try and get that first
10:36
job to get your foot in the door and
10:38
then from there once you get that first
10:39
job that's when you can really start to
10:40
build your experience start to learn on
10:42
the job
10:43
and start to progress in the industry
10:44
career number four on the list is
10:46
senior police officer so senior police
10:48
officers are
10:49
the management of the police the people
10:51
who manage the people and the direction
10:53
of the police force so they might be
10:54
responsible for
10:55
a particular geographical area like
10:57
london or manchester
10:58
or they might be in charge of a
11:00
particular type of crime such as
11:02
financial crime or gang-related crime
11:04
the work involves managing people
11:06
administration
11:07
and overseeing the operations of police
11:09
work to ensure that criminals get
11:11
convicted
11:11
so senior police job is obviously very
11:13
important they carry a lot of
11:14
responsibility
11:15
but they're also very interesting jobs
11:17
very rewarding and you're making a big
11:19
impact on society when you're doing a
11:20
job like that
11:21
but it's also worth noting on the
11:23
negative side that there's always some
11:24
level of risk if you're working in the
11:25
police
11:26
the average senior police officer in the
11:28
uk earns around 57 000 pounds a year
11:30
which is more than double the country's
11:32
average salary usually anybody entering
11:34
the british police force will need to
11:35
start as a police constable
11:37
and constables are the police that you
11:39
see out about policing the streets who
11:41
are actually
11:42
physically responding to and dealing
11:44
with crimes police constables in the uk
11:46
start on an average of twenty two
11:47
thousand five hundred pounds a year
11:48
and the first promotion into a
11:50
managerial role will usually come around
11:52
seven years
11:52
where they will be promoted to sergeant
11:54
level and this is where they'll start to
11:55
get more involved with the
11:56
administration side of police work
11:58
managing other police officers
12:00
and this carries a pay rise of up to 43
12:02
000 pounds a year
12:03
which is obviously quite a decent jump
12:05
from the original starting salary then
12:07
at around the 12 year mark you could
12:08
expect to be promoted to
12:10
inspector level which is an even more
12:11
senior management level
12:13
where you'd be predominantly office
12:14
based and you would be leading a big
12:16
team
12:17
planning operations and leading strategy
12:19
and from there the next usual promotion
12:21
would be chief inspector level
12:22
which is an even bigger step into senior
12:24
management and
12:26
that's where you'd hit the average high
12:27
pay for a senior police officer at
12:29
around 57 000 pounds a year
12:31
and this will normally take around 15
12:33
years to achieve the police have a very
12:35
strict career path and to join the
12:36
police in the uk you need to apply to
12:38
one of the forces directly
12:40
so you need to apply to somewhere like
12:41
the metropolitan police or the british
12:43
transport police
12:44
there's actually a website called
12:46
joiningpolice.co.uk
12:47
which tells you which forces are
12:49
recruiting right now and how to apply
12:51
so i'll put a link to that page below
12:53
every force has slightly different
12:55
requirements but generally speaking to
12:56
join any of the police forces
12:58
you'll need to have the following things
12:59
you need to be 18 years of age
13:01
or you can apply at 17 but you need to
13:03
be turning 18 by the time you'll
13:05
actually be joining the police
13:06
you have to be a british citizen or you
13:08
have to be a foreign national with long
13:09
enough leave to be able to stay in the
13:11
country indefinitely you have to be fit
13:12
and healthy with good eyesight you
13:14
cannot have a criminal record of any
13:16
kind
13:17
although some forces will accept very
13:19
very minor criminal offences on your
13:21
record
13:21
some forces will also require some basic
13:23
gcses if you don't have a degree you can
13:25
join the police apprenticeship scheme
13:28
where you will receive three years of
13:29
training on the job to become a police
13:30
constable
13:31
if you do have a degree some forces are
13:33
actually offering something called
13:34
detective entry
13:36
where you can actually join the police
13:37
as a detective and skip out some of
13:38
those earlier stages but there's still
13:40
a two-year preparation period that you
13:42
need to pass if you take that route and
13:44
whichever route you take the police
13:45
application process
13:46
is hard it's not the kind of job where
13:48
you'll do a couple of interviews and
13:49
then start the next week
13:51
most police forces will require you to
13:53
attend assessment centers
13:54
to undergo written tests judgment tests
13:57
fitness tests
13:58
and a very strict vetting process and to
14:00
give you some more information on what's
14:01
required
14:02
in the police application process i'll
14:04
put a link below
14:05
to the joining the police dot co eco
14:07
website which has a lot more detailed
14:09
information on that and the fifth career
14:11
on this list is
14:12
gp or general practitioner so general
14:14
practitioners are the
14:16
doctors that you would go and see your
14:17
local doctor surgery so they work
14:19
directly with people in their local
14:20
community
14:21
doing things like diagnosing symptoms
14:23
prescribing medicines and
14:25
referring patients to specialists more
14:27
complex health issues
14:29
so it's a really good match for people
14:30
who are interested in the sciences like
14:32
biology and chemistry
14:33
and it's really good for people who
14:34
enjoy working with and helping people
14:37
and it's also probably more suited to
14:39
academic type people because there's a
14:40
lot of subject matter to learn and
14:42
retain
14:43
to make sure you're providing the
14:45
correct diagnosis to patients
14:46
an average doctor in the uk will earn
14:48
around 62 000 pounds a year
14:50
but those with more experience can earn
14:51
even more doctors have a very structured
14:53
career path and every gp will have to
14:55
start with the nhs as a junior doctor on
14:57
around 28 thousand pounds a year
14:59
in this role they'll be rotated around
15:00
the hospital and they will receive
15:02
their two years of foundation training
15:04
to become a qualified doctor then your
15:06
salary would increase to around the 40
15:08
to 50k mark as a qualified doctor
15:10
but you then have to do a further three
15:11
years of on-the-job training
15:13
to qualify as a general practitioner at
15:15
that point your salary will increase to
15:16
around the 60k mark
15:18
but with experience that can be
15:19
increased further to 70
15:21
80 and beyond to become a junior doctor
15:23
you need to do a five-year medicine
15:25
degree
15:26
so this is obviously a very big
15:27
commitment both time-wise and
15:29
financially
15:30
if you already have a science degree you
15:32
can do a shorter conversion course
15:33
but either way there is a lot of study
15:35
involved in becoming a doctor
15:37
so you really need to do research and
15:38
make sure it's the career for you before
15:40
you start doing that and i've actually
15:42
got a video on the channel which i'll
15:43
put a link up to somewhere
15:45
with some guidance on picking a career
15:47
path that's right for you and the final
15:48
career
15:49
on this list is pilot and here we're
15:52
talking about commercial pilots so we're
15:54
talking about the kind of pilots
15:56
who would be flying the planes that you
15:57
take to go on holiday so obviously it's
15:59
a very very important responsible job
16:01
because you're ensuring the
16:02
safe travel of hundreds of passengers at
16:04
a time but also a very exciting job and
16:06
one that'll potentially allow you to
16:08
travel the world
16:08
at the time of doing this study the
16:10
average salary of a pilot is 92 000
16:13
pounds according to the office of
16:15
national statistics
16:16
making it the highest paid job in the uk
16:18
at the moment after completing pilot
16:20
training which i will discuss in a bit
16:22
more detail later
16:23
pilots will need to join an airline as a
16:25
first officer which is the most
16:27
junior pilot that you'll see on a
16:28
commercial flight and that pays an
16:30
average salary of 45 000 pounds a year
16:32
from there you would have to complete 1
16:34
500 hours of flying time
16:36
to gain promotion to captain which will
16:38
see the salary rise to 60 000 pounds a
16:41
year
16:41
and normally takes around eight years to
16:42
achieve and then with a further eight
16:44
years experience on top of that you
16:45
could expect to hit the higher salary of
16:47
92 000 pounds a year becoming a pilot is
16:49
very difficult
16:50
because you have to attend a private
16:52
flying school
16:53
and gain what's called a frozen license
16:55
before you can get a job as a first
16:56
officer with an airline and
16:58
the schools that provide these training
16:59
charge an average of 95 000 pounds
17:02
for those courses and they take an
17:04
average of one to three years to
17:05
complete
17:06
and the government don't offer student
17:07
loans like they do for university
17:09
degrees
17:10
so this will have to be completely
17:12
self-funded which means that you'll have
to take out a big loan or pay in stages
and both of which are obviously huge
commitments so if you're thinking about
becoming a pilot you have to do lots of
research to ensure it's the right career
for you before you get started
and then you have to undertake that
private training i'll put some links to
some of the well-known flying schools in
the description below so that brings me
to the end of the video
thanks very much for watching and of
course if you have any questions about
any of the jobs i've mentioned
